Divine Proportion

"Is God a mathematician?"

The irrational number Phi, also known as the Golden Ratio or Divine Proportion, has had tremendous importance throughout history, both in mathematics and in art. It is a prime example of elegant mathematics as building blocks of nature, and also of the relationship between mathematics and aesthetics. Scientists have long wondered if God is out there, and if so, did God use mathematics as a language for designing the universe? Is this what informs our sense of what is beautiful, as well as our instincts about what is "right"?

"Divine Proportion" is a CG animated art piece which explores an entire environment inspired by the Golden Ratio, its properties, and its occurrences in nature. The film follows a mysterious object floating through this world, searching for where it belongs in a greater pattern. This is just what we humans are searching for, when we use mathematics to both describe and discover the universe.

"I do not know if God is a mathematician, but mathematics is the loom upon which God weaves the fabric of the universe…"
