Theme Costume Parties

Here are some interesting ideas for theme costume parties.

Micro Cosmos Costume Party

Imagine scaling everything up, so that people are about the size of average insects. People can dress up as anything very small, animals, plants, or inanimate objects.

Some examples:
* Try our fly costume.
* Dress up as a butterfly or moth.
* Dress up as an ant.
* Be a huge dandelion, or a blade of grass.
* How about a worm, or a caterpillar?

Art Costume Party

This one was my mother's idea, and as she pointed out to me, this is a great way for an art teacher to get his/her students excited about art and art history.

The idea is for people to dress up as their favorite paintings, paintings by their favorite artists, or even dress up as a certain style of painting.

Some examples:
* Dress up as Van Gough's self portrait; paint a streaky red beard on your face; wear an old hat and an old blue coat and paint streaks on them that look like Van Gough's style of painting.
* Dress up as a Picasso, from his cubist period; paint your face so it looks like the distorted faces in the paintings.
* Make a blue guitar of cardboard and say you're Picasso's "Man With a Blue Guitar".
* Dress up as a Pollock; splatter lots of paint on a white sheet and wrap yourself in it.

You get the picture. (No pun intended.)

Period Costume Party

Here, you select a period of time to be the theme of the party. People should dress according to the period, and the music at the party should match. (You can weave some new music in too if you like.)

Some examples (of rather recent periods):
* Hippie 60's party - hippie music, hippie outfits, bell bottom jeans, peasant blouses, long hair, peace signs and flowers
* 70's party - disco music, glitzy outfits, platform shoes, wide collars and polyester suits.
* 80's party - 80's pop music, leg warmers, headbands and off-the-shoulder sweatshirts (think Flashdance), or dress up as Madonna with her 1980's look.

By the way, is it just me, or have any of you noticed how all those outfits from the 60's and 70's came back recently? And I think the 80's might be next...

Superhero Costume Party

Everybody should dress up as superhero.

Some obvious examples:
* Wonderwoman
* Superman
* Batman
* Spiderman

Some less obvious examples:
* Mighty Mouse
* The Green Hornet
* The Powerpuff Girls

Comic Strip Costume Party

This is kind of an expansion on the superhero theme. Many comic strips are about superheros, but there are a lot that aren't. Also, with this theme, you can dress up as someone besides the hero of the superhero comic strip.

Some examples:
* Various characters from Superman, Spiderman or other superhero comic strips
* Archie (or Betty or Veronica or Jughead...)
* Peanuts - Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, etc.
* Two people can dress up as the two spies from Spy Vs. Spy.

Well, that's all for now. If you have any great ideas of your own for theme parties, please share them. Have fun!
